Aging Pools and ADA Compliance: A Reality Check

A recent article in PoolPro Magazine explores an issue many commercial pool operators are facing today: aging facilities and the growing need to address accessibility and ADA compliance.

In “ADA Reality Check: Addressing Accessibility Requirements in Aging Commercial Pools,” author Carolyn Koenig examines the challenges hotels, community pools, and recreation facilities encounter as pools move beyond their first decade of operation. Over time, equipment wears, decks shift, and accessibility features installed years ago may require maintenance, upgrades, or replacement.

The article includes insight from Aqua Creek Products Marketing Director Marley Cunningham, who addresses one of the most common misunderstandings about accessibility requirements.

“One of the biggest misunderstandings is the belief that existing pools are ‘grandfathered in’ and exempt from ADA requirements. That’s simply not true. Existing facilities are expected to comply to the extent that it is readily achievable.”

The piece also explores how ADA enforcement can vary between jurisdictions and why proactive planning for accessibility upgrades can help facility owners avoid costly surprises later.
