When most people hear the words spinal cord injury, they tend to think about what's been lost.

Spend a few hours with the team at Empower Spinal Cord Injury (Empower SCI), and you'll walk away thinking about everything that's still possible.

Recently, Aqua Creek Products had the opportunity to welcome members of Empower SCI to our headquarters in Missoula, Montana. What began as a tour of our manufacturing facility quickly turned into something much more meaningful. We talked about accessibility, aquatic recreation, the evolution of the ADA, and the role thoughtful design plays in helping people enjoy the water safely and independently.

Those conversations were insightful, but they only told part of the story.

A few days later, our team joined Empower SCI for one of their community gatherings at Free Cycles Missoula. There was live music filling the air, food being shared, old friends reconnecting, and plenty of introductions between people meeting for the first time. It felt less like an organized event and more like a family reunion—one built on shared experiences, encouragement, and the understanding that no one has to navigate life's challenges alone.

That's the thing about Empower SCI.

Their mission isn't simply to provide resources for people living with spinal cord injuries. They help people rediscover confidence, build meaningful connections, and realize that life after an injury can still be filled with adventure, travel, recreation, and new experiences.

It's easy to focus on the equipment when you work in our industry. Pool lifts, accessibility standards, engineering, and compliance are all important pieces of the puzzle. But organizations like Empower SCI remind us that the goal has never been the equipment itself.

The goal is participation.

It's the confidence to join your family in the pool instead of watching from the deck. It's taking a swim while on vacation whenever you want, without having to ask for assistance. It's signing up for adaptive sports, meeting new friends, or simply feeling like you belong in spaces that everyone else enjoys.

Those experiences don't happen because of one organization, one product, or one piece of legislation. They happen because advocates, nonprofits, manufacturers, facility operators, caregivers, and communities continue working toward the same goal: removing barriers that keep people from living life on their own terms.

That shared commitment is what made our time with Empower SCI so meaningful.

We left inspired - not because we learned something entirely new about accessibility, but because we were reminded who accessibility is really for. Behind every accessible pool, every adaptive program, and every inclusive facility is a person with goals, passions, plans, and places they want to go. And at Aqua Creek, we're proud to play a small role in making those moments possible.

We're grateful to Empower SCI for spending time with our team, for welcoming us into their community, and for the work they do every day to empower individuals living with spinal cord injuries.

At Aqua Creek, we always say our mission goes far beyond manufacturing pool lifts—it’s about creating opportunities for independence, dignity, and joy. This year, we’ve been fortunate to partner with an incredible organization that embodies this mission in action: Wheelchairs & Walleyes of North Dakota.

Founded by Jeff Goos and his family, Wheelchairs & Walleyes began with a simple but powerful belief: lake recreation should be for everyone. After seeing firsthand how limited public lake access was for people with mobility challenges, Jeff and his wife set out to change that reality. With the help of volunteers, they constructed and donated the most inclusive wheelchair ramp and accessible lift project in North Dakota, giving families an opportunity many had only dreamed of.

One parent who attended their first event shared:

"The gift you gave me and my daughter is something I only believed was possible in my dreams. I had all but given up on my lifelong dream of being able to take my daughter fishing with me. You truly have no idea the impact you have made in my life."

Stories like these are why Wheelchairs & Walleyes continues to grow. What started at Beulah Bay has sparked a movement. Within a week of unveiling their first project, Jeff’s team received requests from across the region—and the momentum hasn’t stopped.

The ripple effect was immediate. Spectators at the boat launch were so moved that one family donated their ADA-approved pontoon on the spot. Just a month later, SCHEELS contributed $50,000 toward additional lifts for upcoming projects. As Melissa Neutman, Public Outreach Coordinator at SCHEELS, shared:

“Wheelchairs and Walleyes is a powerful project that brings freedom, joy, and connection to individuals with mobility challenges throughout outdoor adventure. We are proud to support this initiative and help create meaningful moments for those in the Bismarck-Mandan community.”

Wheelchairs & Walleyes has since set its sights on even bigger goals: completing accessible projects at Hazen Bay and Devils Lake, and expanding into Minnesota, Wyoming, Colorado, and South Dakota. Their vision is bold—making North Dakota the most inclusive state in the nation for lake recreation, boating, and fishing.

For us at Aqua Creek, partnering with Wheelchairs & Walleyes has been a privilege. In the words of Jeff Goos himself:

“Not only is Aqua Creek’s customer service far above any other manufacturer we have ever worked with, but their product is simply far superior to everything we have researched. As far as we are concerned, Wheelchairs & Walleyes will never use another chair company. When you have the best, there is no reason to work with anyone else.”

We’re humbled by those words—but even more by the impact we’ve witnessed firsthand. Because at the end of the day, this is why we do what we do: so families can share a boat ride, a fishing trip, or a memory on the water without barriers holding them back.
